Radioactive Elements in Mineral Water: What's in the Bottle?
Mineral water is sold on purity and minerals — but on its way through rock, water doesn’t just pick up calcium and magnesium. Natural radioactive elements such as radium-226, radium-228, and uranium dissolve out of the ground as well. Germany’s radiation protection office (BfS) has surveyed bottled mineral waters systematically, and U.S. bottled and tap waters are regulated for radionuclides under EPA rules.
How much is in there?
Levels vary widely from spring to spring — it depends on the rock the water passes through. Deep, mineral-rich sources tend to carry more radionuclides than shallow ones. The good news: for adults with normal consumption, the contribution to annual dose is small — a few hundredths of a millisievert per year, far below the normal variation in background radiation. For perspective, food alone contributes about 0.3 mSv per year on average.
The special case: infants
For babies, the math changes. Relative to body weight they drink enormous amounts, and their bodies are more sensitive to radiation. If infant formula is routinely prepared with a radium-rich mineral water, the dose can reach several times an adult’s.
That’s why simple guidance exists: in Europe, waters labeled “suitable for preparing infant food” must meet strict limits — including for uranium and radium. In the U.S., municipal tap water is regulated for radionuclides and is generally a sound choice for formula; if you use a private well, have it tested (see Uranium and radon in drinking water).
Should you switch brands?
For a healthy adult: no. Even two liters a day of a mineral-rich water adds a dose that barely registers next to radon at home, air travel, or a few Brazil nuts. Radioactivity in mineral water is mostly one thing: a neat illustration that natural radiation literally springs from every source.
